Uşak University, based in the western city of Uşak, has announced that it has initiated "formal proceedings" against a student who unfurled a rainbow flag during the graduation ceremony of the Faculty of Science and Letters' Molecular Biology and Genetics Department on July 17.
After videos of the incident circulated on social media, the university's press office released a statement referring to the act as "provocation."
"During the graduation ceremony at Uşak University's Faculty of Science and Letters' Molecular Biology and Genetics Department on July 17, 2023, one of the graduating students suddenly unfurled an LGBT rag concealed in their attire without the permission or knowledge of any authority, with the apparent intention of provoking."
"The university's administrative units cannot approve or support this individual's action. Formal proceedings regarding this personal behavior have been initiated. This announcement is made to the public with due respect."
The incident comes amid widespread bans on LGBTI+ events in the country, especially during the Pride Month. This year's Pride Month witnessed the banning of various activities, including demonstrations, pride marches, film screenings, and social gatherings.
According to the ILGA Europe Rainbow Index, Turkey ranks as the second worst country in Europe for LGBTI+ rights, highlighting the urgent need for improved protection and inclusivity.
