Turkey submitted more than 5,000 legal requests to Twitter for removal of content in the first half of 2021, according to the platform's latest transparency report.
In six moths, Twitter received 43,387 legal requests for content removal, the highest number since it began releasing transparency reports in 2012.
The five countries with the most legal requests were Japan (18,518), Russia (10,448) and Turkey (5,454), India (4,903) and South Korea (2,088).
In response to 54 percent of all requests, Twitter asked account owners to partly or completely remove relevant content, according to the report.
The 3,20 requests for user information submitted by the US made up 26 percent of all such requests. Twitter said it had partly or completely shared users' information in response to 64 percent of the requests.
Also, Twitter removed 4.7 million tweets without a request for violating its rules. Ninety-two percent of the removed tweets were seen less than 100 times before removal, according to the report. (HA/VK)
