Trees started to be uprooted in Maçka Park on February 12 as part of İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s tunnel project. The life defenders who have started to keep watch at the park since February 12, announced that they will continue to be on the watch at the weekend.
It was stated that of the 199 trees 85 will be moved to Mehmet Akif Ersoy Part in Sarıyer, and 114 to different areas.
Maçka Park was planned to be used as tent city in case of a natural disaster that may occur in İstanbul. The park was designated as “Disaster Assembly Area”.
The Maçka Parkı Hepimizin (Maçka Park Belongs to All of Us) initiative has called on people to participate in the watch “to prevent this all together”, sendika.org reported. (PT/TK)
