Jonas, a GPS tracked white stork, left İstanbul yesterday (March 14) after spending 10 days in the city.
Jonas's stay in İstanbul coincided with the four-day long snowstorm in the city that ended early yesterday.
The snowstorm probably prolonged the stork's break in İstanbul, as his GPS tracking data suggests. According to the Animal Tracker app, Jonas arrived on March 3 in rural areas in İstanbul's northeast, near the Şile district.
Jonas's movements between March 1 and 14
On March 9, he crossed to the Arnavutköy district on the city's European side but returned to Şile after a few hours. The cold wave arrived in İstanbul in the early hours of March 10.
During the four-day snowstorm, Jonas remained in the same area, near a waste disposal site, where he was photographed by locals.
Jonas stayed in Şile, İstanbul, during the snowstorm.
The bird travels between Palestine and Germany every year was among many storks that took shelter in İstanbul during the snowstorm.
One-year journey of Jonas
Several people posted photos of storks in northern parts of İstanbul on social media, questioning whether they needed help.
Alper Tüydeş, a wildlife photographer, wrote, "Stork photographs are coming from everywhere. The only thing we need to do is to wait. They have the experience to survive this weather. Just try not to scare them."
Dört bir yandan karda kalmış leylek fotoğrafları geliyor. Yapmamız gereken sadece beklemek. İyi niyetle yaklaşmaya çalışıp onları bu havada uçmak zorunda bırakmayın. Onların tecrübeleri bu havaları atlatabilecek seviyede. Ürkütmemeye çalışın sadece. pic.twitter.com/vwrjLo6tvy
