Middle East Technical University (METU) International Youth Club (UGT) has published a statement regarding 32nd International Spring Festival to be held this year at the university.
As reported by Evrensel newspaper, Governorship of Ankara has banned the three days of the festival, which was planned to be held between May 9 and May 12, and permitted it to take place only on May 9.
Call to a meeting on April 24
In the statement published by the UGT, it has been indicated that the administration of METU has not yet responded to the meeting requests of the club. The UGT has denounced the attitude of the university administration, which has not yet addressed its requests.
Stating that the decision to hold the festival on a single day instead of four is unacceptable, the UGT has made a call to meet at Physics Building on April 24 at 5:40 p.m. to discuss what can be done.
General Secretariat informed students with an e-mail
On April 20, the General Secretariat of METU also sent an e-mail to the students regarding 32nd International Spring Festival.
In the e-mail, it has been indicated that "due to the state of emergency conditions in the country," an application was made to the Ankara Governor's Office to organize the festival on May 9-12, 2018 "in a similar way to the previous years." However, the Governorship informed the METU administration that the festival "could be held for 1 day on May 9, 2018."
In the e-mail, the students have also been informed that after the 32nd International Spring Festival is held on May 9, student clubs and societies can continue their events on the following day:
"As a result, it has been suggested that METU 32nd International Spring Festival be held on May 9 under the coordination of the International Youth Club and with the support of Student Clubs/Societies and General Secretariat, Office of Domestic Services, Directorate of Construction and Technical Works, Directorate of Health, Sports and Culture and Dean of Students; and that METU Culture-Art-Sports Day be held on May 10, 2018."
