Demirtaş’s Demand for Release Rejected by Upper Court As Well

Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) presidential candidate Selahattin Demirtaş’s demand for release has been rejected by an upper court Ankara 20th Heavy Penal Court as well.

Demirtaş’s lawyers firstly applied to Ankara 19th Heavy Penal Court for release on May 21, and the court rejected the demand.

Lawyer Karaman: We are going to the Constitutional Court

Speaking to bianet, one of Demirtaş’s lawyers Mahsuni Karaman said that they will take the case to the Constitutional Court.

Stating that they will first demand the Constitutional Court review the file with priority, Karaman expressed that the Constitutional Court has the authority to do that.

Justification is “the possibility of spoliation of evidence”

Lawyer Karaman said the following about Ankara 20th Heavy Penal Court’s decision to reject the demand for release:

“In its decision of rejection, the court mostly asserted Demirtaş may obfuscate the evidence.

“However, all of the evidence about Demirtaş consist of his speeches and statements for the press he made during his political life.

“All these were made in the public eye and they are recorded. Therefore, any spoilation of evidence is out of the question. Furthermore, there is not even a single speech that he denied among these evidence”. (EKN/TK)
