2 of Those Detained in Kadıköy Go On Hunger Strike

Selin Top and Fatma Yıldırım, who were among the 11 people who were detained during the demonstration held in Kadıköy demanding release of academic Nuriye Gülmen and teacher Semih Özakça, who have been on hunger strike for 78 days, have gone on hunger strike in the custodial prison in which they are kept.

Speaking to bianet as to the developments, attorney Yıldız İmrek said that she met with the detainees in the Gayrettepe Security Directorate yesterday (May 24).

Stating that Top and Yıldırım went on hunger strike to protest their unlawful detention and the ill-treatment they were subjected to as they were being taken into custody, İmrek went on:

“Besides, Fatma Yıldırım said ‘Since I have also been discharged through the statutory decree, I couldn’t accept to eat as they were detained just because of a hunger strike’.

“Yıldırım has circulatory disorder and there are bruises on her wrists due to rear-handcuffing. Furthermore, she was not given her asthma medicine”. (EKN/TK)
