The May Day bans affected civilians, tourists and journalists in Turkey with at least 12 journalists attacked and 1 detained by the police. Journalists’ Society of Turkey (TGC) condemned the police violence.

ECHR Dismisses Complaint on Right to Stand for Election
Prof. Dr. Baskın Oran stood for election as an independent candidate in the Turkish parliamentary elections of 2007. He submitted a complaint about Turkish citizens living abroad not having the right to vote for independent candidates in customs and not being able to campaign on radios and TVs to Strasbourg.

Students, Journalist Released From Prison in Wake of Judicial Reform
Turkish authorities released journalist Abdülmenaf Düzenci on Monday after he spent 17 months behind bars in connection with terrorism related charges, marking the first such occasion since the ratification of the Third Judicial Reform Package last week. Officials also released 14 students on Tuesday but ruled against the release of Oda TV suspects.

Journalist Bedri Adanır Still Under Arrest After Three Years
Journalist Bedri Adanır’s lawyers requested more time from the court where he is standing trial to avert a possible guilty verdict, as Parliament left deliberations on the Third Judicial Reform Package dragging until October. The next hearing is scheduled for Sept. 13.

4 Years Later: Court Considers Additional Suspect
The court eventually decided to investigate who else was involved in the murder of Turkish-Armenian journalist Dink. Osman Hayal will be investigated. Cell phone records are requested from TİB and three GSM operators. The trial was postponed to 29 July.
