IPI's "Press Hero" Nedim Şener Acquitted
Journalist Nedim Şener was acquitted in the case on his book "The Dink murder and the intelligence lies". Şener had been facing imprisonment of up to three years. The International Press Institute chose Şener as one of the international "press heroes".

Journalist Aktan Sentenced, Express Magazine Fined
An Istanbul court handed down a prison sentence of one year and three months to journalist Irfan Aktan for an article published in the Express periodical. Editorial manager Erol received a monetary fine of TL 16,000.

Lawyer Involved in Journalist Murder Case Found Dead
Joint attorney of the family of killed Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink, Hakan Karadağ, was found dead at his home. Lawyer Bakırcıoğlu said that Karadağ was found at 3.00 am on 4 June.

The Yörsan Company demands to remove news related to their workers' resistance in 2008 from the EmekDunyasi website. Apparently, Yörsan is concerned about the brand equity and their reputation. Website officials refuse to remove any news from their site.

Journalists Returned from Israel - İHH Employee Dead
Humanitarian Help Foundation employee Cevdet Kılıçlar was killed during the Isreali attack on the aid ships bound to Gazza on 31 May. Sabah reporter Olgun said that all their personal belongings were seized. IPI criticized: "Worrying signal sent by Israel to repressive nations".

Activists Arrived in Turkey
466 people who had been detained by Israel after an attack on aid ships heading for Gaza have arrived in Turkey. The bodies of 9 people who were killed in the attack were brought to Istanbul, all of them are of Turkish nationality. 17 injured activists are in Ankara.

Summer Recess for Trial on PKK Interview
The prosecution of human rights advocate Tahmaz and Birgün newspaper officials Çeşmecioğlu and Yılmaz was postponed to September. The defendants stand trial because of an interview with Murat Karayılan, leader of the People's Confederation of Kurdistan.

"Atılım" Newspaper Reporters Released after 9 Months
Atılım newspaper reporters Mat and Küçükbattal were released pending trial after nine months in detention. They stand accused of the demolition of a base station in Istanbul. The trial will be continued on 24 September.

Press Institute: Who Else is Being Bugged?
The Press Institute Association criticized the wiretapping of the Milliyet newspaper switchboard, "This is a new example demonstrating a severe violation of press freedom and freedom of expression in Turkey". Journalists organizations TGS and ÇGD condemned the incident.

Hrant Dink Murder Case in Trabzon Reaches Final Stage
The Dink family lawyers demanded the punishment of the eight gendarmerie officers in Trabzon on the grounds of "severe negligence". The defence lawyers requested additional time for preparing their defence. The case was postponed to 28 July.

Aid Ships Attacked by Israel: at least 10 People Killed
Israel attacked a flotilla from the Association for Humanitarian Help. According to the latest information, 16 people were killed when the Israeli military stormed the ships carrying humanitarian help for Gaza.

Journalist Attacked after Report about Attacks on Kurds
DİHA reporter Çelik was first followed and then attacked on 25 May in Istanbul. Çelik has 2 cracks in his head and his left arm is broken in three places. Security cameras recorded footage of the attack. This is the 3rd attack on a DİHA reporter throughout the past 11 days.

The G9 Platform demanded to have press freedom protected under constitutional law. The association of press organizations furthermore requested the amendment of 27 articles of the Turkish Criminal Law and the release of all journalists in detention.

Worker-Peasant newspaper employee Zengin will be taken to court for the first time on 26 August after one year in detention. Zengin declined charges of "membership to an illegal organization" in a letter sent from an Istanbul prison.

Justice Minister: 83 People Tried under Article 301 in 3 Years
Minister of Justice Ergin announced the number of investigations and trials under article 301 to have summed up to 83 cases throughout the past 3 years. According to Ergin, a total of 1,252 requests were put forward related to files concerned with freedom of speech.

Books from French Writer Reviewed by Prime Ministry
In the case on three allegedly obscene books, the court found an expert report issued by Galatasaray University insufficient. The file of publisher Sancı and interpreter Yerguz was sent to the Prime Ministerial Board for the Protection of Children from Harmful Publications.

Kurdish Initiative Continues: 120 Detentions
The police and the gendarmerie carried out operation against the Kurdish umbrella organization KCK in several cities all over Turkey. More than 120 people were taken into custody - most of them are university students and members of the pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party.

Thwarted Bomb Attack on Doğan Media Centre
A suspicious package left in front of the Doğan Media Centre in Istanbul turned out to be a bomb. The police disarmed the bomb. Footage of monitoring cameras installed in public places is being investigated.

The private security of a university in Antakya stopped DİHA reporter Murat Altunöz to cover a boycott in the canteen organized by the university's Students Association. Altunöz was forced to enter a car and was told, "You will have to face bad things".

Kurdish Chief Editor Released after Defence in Kurdish
A court in Diyarbakır released Mehdi Tanrıkulu, editorial manager of the Kurdish Azadiya Welat newspaper, pending trial after 1.5 months in detention. Tanrıkulu was detained because he had insisted on presenting his defence in Kurdish.

ECHR: Turkey to Pay Compensation to Norma Cox for Entry Ban
USA citizen Norma Cox was repeatedly expelled from Turkey in the 1980s because she was seen as a "danger to the national security". The European Court of Human Rights decreed that the entry ban interfered with the right to freedom of expression and convicted Turkey.

DİHA reporter Eskin was released pending trial after 5 months in detention. He was arrested when he was covering a demonstration against conditions of detention for imprisoned PKK leader Öcalan. Eskin was handcuffed when he was taken to the hearing.
