Country-Wide Protests: "Don't Touch the Internet"
Tens of Thousands of people took the streets in 31 Turkish provinces on 15 May to demonstrate against the "Draft Bill on Rules and Procedures of the Safety of Internet Use". The draft law will be enforced on 22 August.

4 Students in Custody for Attending Demonstrations
4 students in Van who were active in recent student protests were taken into custody by the Anti-Terror Police on 11 May. They were allowed to talk to their lawyers only after 24 hours. The lawyers are barred from seeing the file because of a decision of confidentiality.

Conscientious Objector on Hunger Strike for 14 Days
Conscientious objector Süver started a hunger strike 14 days ago after his escape from prison and his arrest one day later. On 3 May, he was taken to a closed prison in Manisa where a 20-day isolation punishment was imposed on him. Reportedly, he is not in good health.

12 People Arrested after KCK Operations
17 people were taken into custody in the course of operations against the KCK in several provinces last week. Twelve of them were arrested. Lawyer Aktar said that he has only limited access to the file because the investigation was classified.

138 Words Banned from the Internet
The Telecommunication Communication Presidency banned 138 words and terms from the internet. The list also includes words used in everyday life. The number of access bans is expected to increase; also food home delivery sites or football supporters' clubs will be affected.

14-Year-Old Detained for 10 Months - Lawyer on Hunger Strike
14-year-old Ö.S. has been detained for ten months under suspicion of "membership in a terrorist organization". Ö.S. is reported to have been exposed to maltreatment. His lawyer started a symbolic hunger strike of one day to draw attention to the situation.

Kurdish Musician Tunç Tried for Saying "Guerrilla"
After more than a hundred cases were opened against Kurdish folk singer Tunç, he is now facing charges of "propaganda for an illegal organization" for using the term "guerrilla". Tunç sees this kind of trials as a means of intimidation. The case will start in May.

Court of Appeals Overturned Conviction of Police Officer
The trial against police offer Ergin who was handed down prison terms of more than 16.5 years for killing 18-year-old Gemik is being retried after the Court of Appeals quashed the verdict. Gemik was killed with a single bullet shot through his neck.

Status as Member of Parliament not Restored for Kurdish Politicians
The application of Kurdish politicians Aysel Tuğluk and Ahmet Türk to restore their status as members of parliament was dismissed. Both politicians were subjected to a five-year political ban after the ban of the pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party in 2009.

Appeals against Detention of Journalists Rejected
The appeals against the detentions of journalists Ahmet Şık and Nedim Şener were rejected by court. Both were arrested on 6 March in the scope of the Ergenekon investigation. The decision does not mention a concrete reason. Turkey is facing national and international criticism.
