“We will raise a religious generation” was the statement of PM Erdoğan made last week. Prof Fatma Gök assessed this much disputed statement for bianet. She said that the republican ideology as well as the AKP saw education as a tool to raise certain generations.

Dev-Yol Trial Time-Barred
The Dev-Yol main trial was closed by prescription after 30 years. The case started with 723 defendants in 1982. At last, procedures were continued against 21 defendants. Lawyer Mehdi Bekatş said that this decision was expected.

Instalment Sentence for Broken Bone
The court found Sergeant Ersoy guilty of having beaten Private Abravcı who suffered a broken hip bone. However, Ersoy received a monetary fine to be paid in instalments since it was not confirmed whether the fracture was caused by the beating.

79 People Died in Turkish Mines in 2011
A study by the Chamber of Mining Engineers revealed that 79 people died in mines in Turkey in 2011, two of whom were mining engineers. 117 people were wounded.

57 Percent of Population Do not Use Internet
According to a study into the "Use of the Internet and Social Media" of the KONDA research company, 57 percent of the Turkish population do not use the internet at all. 41 percent deems it harmful and the section of society using it the least is the electorate of the AKP.

Halil Savda Released
Conscientious objector Halil Savda was released after he gave his statement to the prosecutor. He had been taken into custody at the airport in Istanbul when he was about to follow an invitation of Amnesty International to Paris.

Conscientious Objector İnan Süver Free
Conscientious objector İnan Süver was released after 16 months in prison. His sentence was postponed. Süver told bianet that he was extremely happy to be part of the social life again after his release.

Kurdish Politician Alınak Back to Prison
Mahmut Alınak was arrested again together with Mehmet Ayata, Yalçın Sarıtaş and Sebahat Zeynep Arat upon the prosecutor's appeal. They were taken to a prison in Istanbul. Alınak had initially been released pending trial after the KCK operation on 22 November.

Evidence in Kurdish, Court in Turkish
At the 28th hearing of the Diyarbakır KCK trial, the court rejected the transfer of the case to another province and accepted the request to have the defendants appear at court altogether. The next hearing was set for 12 December.

The trial regarding the death of soldier Uğur Kantar who allegedly died as the result of torture started on 18 November. The court is going to evaluate the motion for lack of jurisdiction. The decision will be announce at the next hearing on 16 December.

Being a Journalist in the Disaster Zone
A 5.6 magnitude aftershock rocked the city of Van in south-eastern Turkey on 9 November. Two hotels hosting rescue teams and journalist were destroyed. Journalists who are working in the disaster zone described their working conditions in interviews with bianet.

bianet Went to Court - Regulations Changed
Due to a change of regulations the Council of State dismissed bianet's request to stall the disputed internet filter application. Bianet had filed an according case against the application which is part of the "Draft Bill on Principles and Procedures for the Safe Use of the Internet".

According to lawyer Gülüm, Pof Ersanlı's arrest was based on the assumption that the Political Academy of the BDP has connections with an armed terrorist organization. Gülüm claims that the allegations lack a legal basis and that the arrest of her client is politically motivated.

14-year-old Ö.S. was released pending trial after 14.5 months in detention. His indictment was prepared after 13 months. Ö.S. stood accused of "membership of a terrorist organization". At the third hearing he was sentenced to imprisonment of almost five years.
