Police Officer Sentenced to 19 Years in Jail for Gezer Murder
Special operations police officer Serkan Akbulut was handed down a life sentence for killing Emrah Gezer because he sang a Kurdish song. The sentence was then mitigated to imprisonment of 19 years and 5 months due to "unjust provocation".

Green Light for Roth's Visit of Detained Journalists
German green politician Roth criticized restrictions of freedom of expressions in Turkey at a press conference held after she had not been allowed to visit detained journalists Şık and Şener. She finally received permission from the prison for the visit during the meeting.

Torture Suspect Officers Not Attended the Enver Aydemir Trial
Colonel M.Ö. and petty officer İ.S., who are on trial with charges of torturing Enver Aydemir, a conscientious objector that was taken into custody on December 24, 2009 and arrested, did not come to the hearing. Aydemir’s lawyers challenged the court arguing that it lacks fair trial standards.

Child labour expert Assoc. Prof. Tanır calls for an extension of compulsory education to 12 years in order to decrease the number of child workers in Turkey further. Tanır drew attention to the fact that two thirds of all child workers in Turkey work under severe conditions.

Refugees from Syria Started Hunger Strike
More than 10,000 people from Syria sought refuge from the Assad government in Turkish refugee camps. Three camps were set up in Antakya. Refugees now started a hunger strike because the refugee camps are completely isolated from the outside world.

3 Greenpeace activists were taken into custody after posting banners against nuclear power at a meeting of PM Erdoğan. They were released a few hours later. The activists encountered negative reactions by women at the meeting even before the police intervened.

Massive Police Intervention against Anti-AKP Demonstrators
Heavy clashes occurred between demonstrators and the police before and after a meeting of PM Erdoğan in Hopa in north-eastern Turkey. The police threw many gas bombs and made use of water cannons. One person died, many protestors and policemen were injured.

Students in Jail for at Least 20 Months for Posting Banner
"Freedom for Ferhat Tüzer and Berna Yılmaz" was the message of the supporters of the two university students who have been detained for 14 months because they posted a banner calling for free education. The students remained in detention. The trial was postponed to 6 October.

Isolation Punishment for Conscientious Objector Executed
The 20-day isolation punishment for conscientious objector İnan Süver on the grounds of "desertion" was executed as of 23 May. Süver resumed his hunger strike on 16 May as a sign of protest against his imprisonment.
