Vice Prime Minister Kurtulmuş has announced that the State of Emergency (OHAL) has been extended by three months as of October 19.
Making a statement following the cabinet meeting, Kurtulmuş said that “another decision taken by the Cabinet is to extend the 90-day OHAL (State of Emergency) as of October 19, midnight 1 a.m.”.

Following the National Security Council and Council of Ministers meetings held subsequent to July 15 coup attempt , President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had declared that a state of emergency would be put in effect on July 20 for three months. The respective Cabinet decision was put to vote on July 21 and approved by the Parliament.
As a next step, the decision will be published on the Official Gazette and submitted to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) for approval. The Parliament has the authority to change the duration of OHAL.
On demand of the Cabinet, OHAL can be extended provided that the duration of each OHAL does not exceed four months and six months in total.
Article 120 of the Constitution regulates that OHAL can be extended in case indications of escalating violence arise or public order is severely disturbed due to acts of violence. (AS/DG)
