Don’t Get on Phaeton Horses are Dying Initiative is calling on all rights defenders to attend the demonstration to be held in Kadıköy, İstanbul tomorrow (June 2) in protest of the cruelty against horses.
The demonstration will be staged in front of Adalar Vapurs İskelesi (Islands Ferry Port) in Kadıköy.
According to the report by Committee for Monitoring Animal Rights (HAKİM), there are 272 phaetons on the islands and 1,540 horses are worked at these phaetons.
400 horses die in phaeton accidents and/or due to being neglected, according to official stats.
Lifespan of horses is 20 year, lifespan of phaeton horses is a couple of years
According to the information that Don’t Get on Phaeton Horses are Dying Initiative provided:
- Lifespan of horses is 20 years. However, lifespan of horses worked at phaetons live maximum two years.
- Islands have very steep slopes. Running on blacktop and steep slope is against the nature of horses. In summary, making horses work at the Islands is against their nature.
- When asphalts are cracked and broken, horses stumble and they get injured. When they get injured, they are left for dead as they won’t be able to run anymore.
- There is no treatment center for horses at the Islands. (ÇT/TK)
