Detained after opening a banner of ‘Enough is Enough,’ 7 women released

Taken into custody after staging a protest at the Provincial Directorate of the Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Services in İstanbul on July 7, seven women have been released with an international travel ban and on the condition that they give signatures once a month.

The women from the Kırkyama Women's Solidarity and FeminAmfi platform were detained after they took to the window of the directorate and opened a banner that read "Enough is Enough! Women Want Life Safety!".

They demanded that the İstanbul Convention be implemented and women be provided with life, job and income security.

They will object to the ruling

Taken into custody by the police on July 7, women were referred to the İstanbul 9th Penal Court of First Instance yesterday (July 8). The court board has ruled that the women shall be released from detention on probation.

Accordingly, women will not be allowed to go abroad as per an international travel ban and they will be obligated to give signatures once a month.

Women will reportedly object to these judicial control measures.

What happened?

In protest of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) government's policies on women, a group of women from Kırkyama Women's Solidarity and FeminAmfi platform entered the İstanbul Provincial Directorate of the Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Services on July 7, took to a window and opened a banner of "Enough is Enough! Women Want Life Safety!"

Seven women were then battered and taken into custody by the police. While Karşı Mahalle news website reporter Şeriban Alkış was reportedly also among the detained, they were all taken to the İstanbul Directorate of Security on Vatan Avenue in Fatih district.

After the related formalities were completed there, they were taken to the İstanbul Courthouse in Çağlayan. The prosecutor's office referred the women to the İstanbul 9th Penal Judgeship of Peace without taking their deposition and demanded their arrest. (EMK/SD)
