Criminal Complaint by Elvan Over Police Breaking Her Arm

Gülsüm Elvan, who had her arm broken by police while being taken into custody during a protest in solidarity with the arrested academics Nuriye Gülmen and Semih Özakça on hunger strike, has filed a criminal complaint before the İstanbul Courthouse in Çağlayan.

Gülsüm Elvan, the mother of Berkin Elvan, who lost his life after being hit on the head by a tear gas cartridge during the Gezi Resistance in 2013, and Berkin Elvan's sister Özge Elvan have reported on their social media accounts that they had been handcuffed from the back and were exposed to torture while being taken into custody.

Elvan's family and her attorneys Can Atalay and Çiğdem Akbulut demanded that a public case also be opened against the police officers for "deprivation of liberty" and "physical torture".

After filing the criminal complaint, Gülsüm Elvan and Berkin Elvan's mother Sami Elvan made a statement in front of the courthouse and announced that they would continue supporting Gülmen and Özakça who have been on hunger strike since for 167 days.

Elvan needs an operation

In a medical examination performed after being taken into custody, according to the hospital report, it was confirmed that Gülsüm Elvan's left arm was broken and an operation is necessary.

On these grounds, the attorneys filed a criminal complaint on the charge of "aggravated torture" in accordance with Article 95 of the Turkish Penal Code. (TP/HK/DG)
