A Covid-19 patient in the southeastern Diyarbakır province died after not being able to find an available intensive care bed in the city and four surrounding provinces.
Relatives of Şeref Yıldız told the Mesopotamia Agency that they called all hospitals in Diyarbakır, Mardin, Batman, Elazığ and Urfa only to be told that all intensive care units were full.
The number of Covid-19 patients in intensive care has sharply increased since the reopening at the start of June as they currently make up about 10 percent of all coronavirus patients.
He was also a COPD patient and was very careful about coronavirus, Yıldız's spouse's sister, Ruken Koyun, told the agency. She said that she went to the family healthcare center after feeling unwell last Monday but was told he "caught a cold."
"Because he had difficulties breathing, he was taken to a private hospital, tested and had a tomography scan the next day. After he had a tomography scan, the doctor said, 'It' corona 90 percent, because there is glaciation in his lungs'.
"Two days later, the positive test result came. Although he felt well on the first day of his hospitalization, the doctor said, 'The outbreak advanced in the lungs. He would have already died if we had not intervened'."
Because there were no ventilators in the private hospital, they called all hospitals in the five cities but were told that there were no available intensive care beds, Koyun added.
"They entered a code, if there was a free bed, they would take him first. But he lost his life last night while waiting for a bed," she said. (RT/VK)
