5.5 magnitude earthquake hits Adana

A 5.5 magnitude earthquake hit the Kozan district of Adana, southern Turkey, at 08.44 a.m. local time (GMT+3), according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

The quake, with a depth of 11.27 kilometers, was also felt in the adjacent city of Mersin.

As a result of the earthquake, a dilapidated building in Kozan suffered partial collapse. No casualties have been reported so far.

Adana was among the 11 provinces affected by the powerful earthquakes centered in Maraş back in February.

AFAD Chair Yunus Sezer, provided reassurance to the public in a statement on Twitter: "As of now, there are no negative conditions reported after the 5.5 magnitude earthquake. Field screening activities are ongoing, and our teams are on high alert."

Adana Governor Süleyman Elban also shared initial observations on Twitter, saying, "In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, we are thankful that there have been no reports of injuries or fatalities. Our building inspections are currently underway.

"Some residents took to the streets, but overall, there is no widespread panic, and our citizens are remaining calm. During the quake, we experienced around 10 seconds of shaking."
