173 workers killed in occupational homicides in June

At least 173 workers died in occupational homicides in June, according to the monthly report of the Health and Safety Labor Watch (İSİG).

The number of workers killed in occupational homicides, including refugee workers, in the first half of the year reached 1,155, said the İSİG.

137 of the killed workers last month were paid workers (workers and civil servants) and 36 were working on their own behalf.

Nine of the killed workers were women and 164 were men. Women workers were working in the sectors of agriculture, trade, education, office and healthcare.

Six child workers and 54 workers over the age of 51 were killed last month.

Five of the killed workers were from Syria and two were from Afghanistan.

The sectors with the highest number of deaths were construction/road, agriculture/forestry, trade/office/education, transportation, metalwork, municipality/general, healthcare, security, mining, chemicals, trees and energy.

In the agricultural sector, 28 farmers and 15 workers lost their lives.

An occupational homicide occurred almost every day in the construction sector. Twenty-five of the incidents were related to falling from a height.

The most common causes of death were falling from a height, crush, shuttle/traffic accident, Covid-19, heart attack, suicide, violence, poisoning/suffocation and electric shock.

Fourteen workers were killed in İstanbul, 11 were killed in Antep, eight were killed in Antalya and six were killed in Ankara. (HA/VK)
