53 Detainees Apply to ECHR after 1 Year in Prison
Almost one year has passed since the detention of 53 people, among them politicians and journalists, related to an operation against the Kurdish KCK organization. The lawyers of the detainees applied to the ECHR after no action had been taken by Turkish courts for ten months.

"Critical Talks" between Şükre and State Council Attack Suspect
"Ergenekon" defendant Şükre admitted to have given weapons related to the State Council attack in 2006 to Arslan, one of the prime suspects of the attack. Apparently, Şükre provided a car and weapons to him. Both defendants spoke to each other on the phone on the day of the attack.

Yet Another Trial for Pro-Kurdish Politicians Türk and Tuğluk
Banned politicians Türk and Tuğluk are now on trial regarding the hand-over of eight soldiers kept hostage by the PKK in 2007. The Ankara Chief Prosecution demands five years imprisonment each on account of a picture of PKK leader Öcalan at the place of the hand-over.

Police Officer Zenit's Case with bianet Dismissed
The Ankara court dismissed the compensation claim of intelligence officer Zenit filed with bianet. Zenit had sued bianet by reason of publishing the transcript of a telephone conversation between him and Tuncel, suspect in the murder case of Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink.

The KCK Executive Council Presidency announced that the near future will either see "a democratic solution or resistance". PKK leader Karayılan said at Reuters: "We can end the ceasefire and resume the armed struggle".

AKP Announced Constitutional Reform Package
Government spokesman Çiçek presented the draft of 23 articles of the constitution to be amended and called the proposal a "compromise". Rights defenders criticized that the draft is lacking important issues regarding the rights of children, women and LGBT people.

Former Democratic Society Party officials Türk and Tuğluk face imprisonment of 45 and 70 years respectively under charges of "spreading PKK propaganda". The former party members were imposed to a political ban after the closure of DTP.

Celebrations of the Kurdish Newroz festival were held all over Turkey during the weekend. Hundreds of thousands of people gathered in major Turkish cities and called for a peaceful and democratic solution of the Kurdish question.

Former prosecutor Kayasu appreciated the amendment of article 15 of the Constitution: "I hope it will be effected. The prosecution of the putschists is very important. The discussion about the statute of limitation is pointless because it does not apply to the duration of immunity".

Two Journalists on Trial for "Cosmic Room" Coverage
A trial has been opened against Hürriyet newspaper journalist Kurt and editorial manager Kılıç although the related investigation into an assassination plot directed at Deputy PM Arınç is still continuing. Both defendants face imprisonment for taking and publishing pictures of Colonel E.Y.B.

Call for Free Education Ends in Detention
"Parasız eğitim istiyoruz" -the slogan "We want free education" on a banner displayed at the "Romani meeting", which was also attended by PM Erdoğan, is seen as an illegal slogan and was reason to detain two young people. Allegedly, holding up the banner was a criminal offence.

Journalists Tahmaz and Demirer Still in the Dock
Hakan Tahmaz will have to appear at court on 1 June for his interview with PKK leading official Karayılan. Temel Demirer will stand trial on 20 May for his statement that Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink was killed for recognizing the Armenian genocide.

Draft Law: TL 500,000 Fine for Discrimination
The government prepared a draft law against discrimination. The bill envisages monetary fines of up to TL 500,000 for discrimination. It includes the establishment of an "anti-discrimination and equality committee" which provides the right to individual application.

Distributor of "Evrensel" Daily Wins at ECHR - Turkey Sentenced
The European Court of Human Rights decreed for a violation of freedom of speech regarding Evrensel newspaper distributor Görkem's being held in custody for three hours in June 2004. Turkey was sentenced by majority vote to pay € 1,800 in compensation.

"Resign, Aliye Kavaf" was written on the banner in the protest of the Pink Life LGBTT Association. The organization filed a criminal complaint against Minister Kavaf who said "Homosexuality is a disease and should be treated".

Freedom of Thought Vanquished Charges of Insult
Alper Ateş was acquitted in the first hearing related to addressing the Prime Minister with the curse "God damn you". Ateş claimed he had "only told the truth about his living conditions". M.B.G., who stands accused of similar allegations, will have to appear before the court on 5 April.

Publisher Taş Acquitted in 1 out of 13 Trials
The prosecutor demanded to drop the case against publisher Taş regarding the book "The water of Avaşin is blue" by prescription. The Istanbul court acquitted Taş who stood accused of "spreading PKK propaganda". Another twelve cases are pending against the publisher.
