NGO representatives, who attended the BIA ² projects training seminar for the rights organizations in Izmir, discussed their relations with the media. The media should be more conscious about the rights. The rights organizations have a lot to for that.

30 rights organizations attended the seminar, where Ugur, Gumrah, Gokcen and Onderoglu made presentations on rights organizations, globalization and becoming influential and visible through the media. The two-day seminar was stage to heated discussions.

44 NGO representatives from 11 provinces attended the first Training for Rights Organizations by BIA². We most of the time are at odds with the state because of the region they work in, and added the media prejudiced, the participants said.

Prime Minister Erdogan sues Gunluk Evrensel newspaper for publishing the slogans of privatized paper factory SEKA workers. He seeks 15,000 new Turkish liras in damages. The next hearing will be held on May 3, the World Press Freedom Day.

Magazine Sued for Erdogan Caricatures
Prime Minister Erdogan sued the owner and the publisher of the Penguen humor magazine for depicting him as an elephant, giraffe, monkey, camel, frog, snake, cow and duck. Penguen may be ordered to pay 40,000 YTL.

The Local Media Training Seminar by BIA2 Project was held in Bursa with the 26 local reporters and 15 students of the Communications High-School. The trainers made presentations about reporting based on rights and pointed to the mistakes of the media.

Prime Minister Continues to Sue Journalists
Zafer newspapers owner Atar, chief editor Konukoglu and columnist Eyyupoglu, who criticized the Erdogans treatment of Denktash, will pay a fine of 3,000 YTL in damages. The criminal suit against the journalists is awaiting the new penal code.

Journalists and caricaturists continue to criticize the Prime Minister Erdogan who sued caricaturist Kart of Cumhuriyet daily for drawing him as a cat. Caricaturist Kart and editor-in-chief Sucu were fined a total of 3,800 dollars for the caricature.

BIA2 Annual Media Report: No Jailing But
According to the BIA2 Report, RTUK ordered 12 local media off the air for a total of 360 days. Two reporters are still in prison. The report tackles 115 cases and conditions of 222 journalists. 13 cases were opened based on article 159 and 8 based on 312.
