Women's Platform for Equality (EŞİK) has underlined that the withdrawal of Turkey from the İstanbul Convention by a decision of the President contradicts the legal framework of the Republic of Turkey and violates the Constitution.

A Boğaziçi student is under a disciplinary investigation for displaying a rainbow flag during protests. Today, students held a protest against this investigation and 12 of them, including the student in question, were detained for carrying rainbow flags.

A man who calls himself “Fırat Delikanlı” has been detained. Having attacked a person, calling him “perverted gay”, he posted the attack on Instagram.

İYİ Party Chair Meral Akşener has denounced Turkey’s withdrawal from the İstanbul Convention with a Presidential decision. “The state has become putty in Erdoğan’s hands,” the opposition party leader has said.

Professor of human rights law Jörg Polakiewicz from the Council of Europe says that as Turkey notified its denunciation of the İstanbul Convention on 22 March, it will be effective as of 1 July, according to the Convention’s related article.

Three groups have criticized the government for pulling out of the treaty to prevent violence against women.

Melih Bulu, the appointed rector of Boğaziçi University, has appointed Prof. Fazıl Önder Sönmez to two positions. Bulu was previously criticized for appointing Prof. Naci İnci to more than one position.

In the wake of Turkey’s withdrawal from the İstanbul Convention, Fenerbahçe has released a written statement and called on the authorities to review the decision: “We would like to emphasize that we are concerned about its social consequences.”
