99 Years and Censorship Survives
Soon the international RSF will rank the worlds countries according to their degree of freedom of the press. Ironically, today is the 99th anniversary of the abolishment of censorship in Turkey.

BIA Media Report-Full Text
The second quarterly BIA media report has been published, making for sobering reading. Journalists, newspapers, radio stations and television channels are still often obstructed when trying to make use of the right of freedom of expression.

BİA² Media Report: State Violates, Who Pays?
The quarterly bianet report for April to June of this year reveals that journalists and reporters in Turkey still face harassment and legal consequences for informing the public. Four journalists are awaiting trial under Article 301.

Same Court Same Journalist Different Decrees
After dismissing a case against journalist Bogatekin three months earlier, the same prosecutors office in Gerger, south-east of Turkey, has started a second trial against the same journalist under Article 301. His trial is to start 25 July.

301 Case against Lawyers on Hold
Five human rights representatives are being tried for a report they wrote on the shooting of a child by security forces. As three of the activists are lawyers, the case has been postponed, awaiting permission of Ministry of Justice to proceed.

Milliyet Cleared of Terrorist Propaganda
Mainstream newspaper Milliyet had been accused of reporting pro-Kurdish propaganda on its website. Newspaper chief and owner were acquitted on 23 May because court acknowledged public interest in the news.

Journalist to be Retried Under Article 301
Journalist Karaca, who had received a prison sentence converted to a fine in his trial under Article 301, is being retried because there was a procedural error in the court proceedings. The first sitting is scheduled for June 20.

The newest trial under the controversial article 301 is that of journalists Ahmet Sik and Lale Sariibrahimoglu for denigrating the armed forces. Journalist Ali Bayramoglu speaks of an increase in authoritarianism.

Appeal of Murdered Journalists Widow
Rakel Dink, widow of the murdered ethnic Armenian journalist Hrant Dink, has appealed to Prime Minister Erdogan to let the Prime Ministerial Review Committee investigate the case further. Her letter has not been answered.

Singer Ferhat Tunc, known for his critical remarks about the Kurdish issue in Turkey, faces yet another trial with regard to his speech during a concert last year. Guerillas are sons of this country just as the soldiers who loose their lives, he said.

Police Pressure After Critical Article
Editor of the local Emirdağ newspaper, Koyuncu has been arrested following an article in which he criticized the local police. Several officers complained against him and Koyuncu will face trial on May 24. He quoted claims of abuse by the police.

Publisher Sırrı Öztürk and writer Tiftikçi are on trial for a critical study on the Turkish army. Public Prosecutor Turhan faces charges for saying, I do not trust the judiciary. Alınak of the DTP party has been sentenced to ten months imprisonment.

Publisher and writer Ragıp Zarakolus trials with regard to two books undertaking the Armenian issue continue. Hes acquitted on one case but the translator of the book will face charges. The other case had been postponed to June 26.

An Istanbul court lifts the ban on acces to the website antoloji.com, implemented with regard to alleged defamatory remarks, after 18 days. After YouTube and Eksisozluk, this is another case where courts rule to completely black out websites.

Magazine Critical of the Army Closed
Weekly newsmagazine Nokta is closed with an unexpected decision by its owner following two consecutive articles critical of the Turkish army. Editor-in-chief Görmüş noted that amounting pressure from the General Staff led to this end.

Courts Continue Blocking Web Sites
An Istanbul court blocks access to the popular online comment sharing site Eksisozluk on grounds it contained defamatory remarks about an individual. The ban has been lifted following sites lawyers appeal but this court action seems to get common.

An Istanbul court condemns Cumhuriyet daily for quoting a main opposition party members criticism about PM Erdogan while another court acquitted Radikal daily on the same allegations. Erdogan urged damages for being insulted by those remarks.

Media Watch Platform to be Founded
A media watch platform will be established in Turkey with the participation of experts, academics, journalists and NGOs. An initiative brought together participants last weekend. The platform will work on creating public awareness on media literacy.

TGC Commemorates Fallen Journalists
Turkeys Journalists Associatrion commemorates 62 journalists who were killed for their thoughts and work since 1909. Most of those took place in the last 30 years. We call on the government to secure journalists right to life, TGC chair Erinç said.

Roj TV Supporters Face Imprisonment
The trial where 56 mayors, most of them members of the pro-Kurdish DTP, are prosecuted for sending a joint letter to the Danish PM Rasmussen urging the refusal of Turkeys efforts for the closure of Roj TV continued. They face imprisonment up to 15 years.

Local Demokrat İskenderun newspaper owner Ersen Korkmaz has been on trial since 4.5 years for an article where he covered a panel on Kurdish guerilla leader Ocalan. If convicted, he faces three years in prison.

Journalists Association of Turkey traditional yearly awards of merit have been given in a ceremony. TGC chair Erinç criticized the governments approach to press freedom and lack of reforms. Nothing changed from last year, he said.
