Germany’s Arms Sales to Turkey Decreases, Yet Continues

Tension between Germany and Turkey has affected arms and ammunitions sales too. German armament firms sold arms and ammunition worth 5,600,000 Euros to Turkey in the first four months of this year. This volume is way below than the year of 2016.

These figures were announced by the Ministry of Economy upon parliamentary inquiry submitted by Left Party MP Sevim Dağdelen, Deutsche Welle reported.

“Authorization of sales was granted earlier”

The figures announced by the ministry include the arms and ammunition whose delivery was realized at the beginning of this year.

The Ministry underlined that some of these sales’ authorization were given years ago.

The arms companies’ export sales must be approved by the government according to the German laws.

Consequence of the tension between the two countries

Germany-Turkey relations have lastly increased with the arrest of German rights defenders Peter Steudtner in Turkey. Steudtner is being accused of “supporting a terror organization” in Turkey.

The Ministry of Economy had previously announced that arms and ammunition sales to Turkey would be scrutinized following the failed coup in Turkey. (HK/TK)
