WHO Europe: Covid-19 Cases Increase in Turkey, Russia, UK

The next few weeks will be critical for Europe regarding the Covid-19 pandemic as the number of cases in the continent has nearly doubled to close to one million, Hans Kluge, World Health Organization's (WHO) regional director for Europe, has stated.

"The storm clouds of this pandemic still hang heavily over the European Region," he said in a video statement. "Make no mistake, despite this spring weather, we remain in the midst of a storm. Several countries are yet to feel its full impact, while others are experiencing a dip as numbers of new cases of Covid-19 are falling."

While the number of cases has been slightly declining in the hardest-hit countries of the region —Spain, Italy, Germany, France and Switzerland—, there have been "sustained or increased levels of incidence" in other countries, including Turkey, the UK and Russia, Kluge noted.

Turkey has so far confirmed nearly 70 thousand cases and over 1,500 deaths of Covid-19. The number of cases has doubled in the last week. (PT/VK)
