U.S. Consulate General İstanbul Employee Released from House Arrest

The İstanbul 27th Heavy Penal Court has ruled that the house arrest of Nazmi Mete Cantürk, who was a security guard at the U.S. Consulate General in İstanbul, shall be lifted. The court has also imposed an international travel ban on Cantürk.

As reported by Reuters news agency, Nazmi Mete Cantürk has been released due to his condition of health.

Arrested on the allegation that "he had connections with the FETÖ [which is held responsible for the coup attempt in 2016]," Cantürk's wife and daughter were also charged with "membership of the FETÖ."

President Erdoğan to meet Trump in Japan

The court has ruled for the release of Cantürk ahead of a meeting planned to be held between President and the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) Chair Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and U.S. President Donald Trump at G20 Summit in Japan.

The G20 Summit will be held in Osaka on June 28-29 and it will be attended by the heads of state and government of 19 countries.

Speaking at the weekly group meeting of his party today (June 25), Erdoğan announced that the S-400 missile defense system purchased from Russia will be delivered to Turkey next month.

The hearing of Metin Topuz on June 28

Another critical hearing to be held this week is that of Metin Topuz, who was also an employee of the U.S. Consulate General in İstanbul.

The hearing of Topuz will be held this Friday (June 28) and the verdict to be given in this hearing also has a critical role in Turkey-U.S. relations.

Serkan Gölge released

NASA worker Serkan Gölge, a Turkey and U.S. citizen who was put on trial in Turkey for "being a member of the FETÖ", was also released from prison in May 2019. Speaking to Reuters News Agency after his release, Gölge said that he wanted to go back to his job at NASA and the U.S. (PT/SD)
