İstanbul municipality to inspect all buildings in the city for earthquake preparedness

İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality has initiated an action plan to inspect 1,2 million buildings in three years for earthquake preparedness.

An earthquake of more than 7.0 magnitude is expected in the near future in the metropolis of 15.5 million people.

Inspections will start from the districts of Silivri and Avcılar, the most vulnerable parts of the city.

An earthquake occured in Silivri in September 2019 left hundreds of buildings damaged in the city.

The project started today with an event attended by Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu.

İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality will conduct building inspections to determine the earthquake resistance of the city. The municipality, which has developed the 'Fast Scanning Method' that will measure the durability of the buildings in the city, will examine all the buildings one by one.

The method has been developed with the contribution of an advisory council consisting of 25 academics. (SO/VK)
