148 US-based Academics Call For Solidarity With Turkey

148 US-based academics have sent a solidarity letter to Tom Malinowski, the US Department of State Assistant Secretary of State for Human Rights and have asked the “US State Department to call on the Turkish government immediately to stop the persecution of Academics for Peace, respect academic freedoms, free the arrested academics (Mungan, Kaya, and Ersoy), and reinstate with compensation all the academics suspended or expelled during the persecution campaign”.

The signatories have expressed their concerns as to the state coercion, situation of the academics in Turkey, human rights and especially freedom of expression violations as;

“We have grown deeply alarmed and shocked by the blatant violations of human rights to which our academic colleagues and counterparts in Turkey have been subjected under an increasingly authoritarian Turkish government”.

Pointing out to their acknowledgement of “Turkey being an ally of the United States and the European Union and its current strong bargaining position due to its role in the war in Syria and the Syrian refugee crisis”,  the signatories have warned that “these geopolitical considerations should not be allowed to exonerate the Turkish government from living up to its human rights obligations or to prevent the US Government from registering a strong complaint against Turkey’s violations of its citizens’ basic rights”.

In their letter, the 148 US-based academics have also drawn attention to the change.org petition “Stop the Persecution of Academics for Peace in Turkey” which has received 2,000 signatures by 18 March 2016 whose call to respect the principles of academic freedom has been ignored by the Turkish government  according to the reports of the change.org group circulating the petition.

Expressing that the “the witch-hunt against the Academics for Peace” had been intensifying, the signatories have called on the US State Department to urge the Turkish government to put an end to the oppression and free the academics arrested.
