The Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) faced off against the Islamic State (ISIS) yesterday (September 6), in the Euphrates Shield Operation conducted alongside the Free Syrian Army (FSA).
Three soldiers were killed and four injured in an ISIS rocket attack.
The killed soldiers were identified as Specialist Sergeant Ziya Özkozanoğlu from Adana, Sergeant Muhammed Koşan from Bingöl, and 26-year-old Specialist Sergeant Osman Karakuş from Amasya.
ISIS’s Amak News Agency announced the news last night, saying: “Two Turkish Army tanks were destroyed with a guided missile in southern Al-Rai.”
The Turkish General Staff said that a single tank was destroyed, and confirmed that it “was hit in clashes which broke out in the Al-Vakf (Vukuf) area.”
The injured soldiers were taken to hospital by helicopter for treatment.
Following the clash the an FSA operation was organised in the area.
Coalition air strike
Today is the 15th day of the TSK-FSA joint operation.
The General Staff announced that 50 targets determined to belong to ISIS were attacked with “storm howitzers”.
Warplanes belonging to the US-directed anti-ISIS coalition also struck ISIS bases in the Baragidah area around 12:30 yesterday.
Coalition-supported FSA forces also captured the villages of Vukuf and Sadvi. A clash broke out in the Vukuf area.
The area captured by the FSA with Turkey’s support reached 680 square kilometers. The previous day the FSA took seven further villages in the Azez-Jarablus area. ISIS-controlled territory no longer borders Turkey.
The FSA have progressed 24 kilometers beyond the Jarablus-Sacu River line.
The Fırat Aews Agency (ANF) meanwhile reported that Turkish forces attacked Rojava.
According to their report, two YPG vehicles were shot at in the village of Enydiware in Derik, and two YPG fighters were injured. (AS/PS)
