bianet compiled news stories of local and national newspapers, internet news, and news agencies. According to these data, men killed 22 women, raped 9 women and children in total, molested 16 women, and injured/committed violence against 55 women in August.
In the first eight months of 2014, men killed 184 women, raped 70 women and teenager girls, committed violence against 417 women, and sexually harassed 77 women and teenager girls.
Murder
Men killed 22 women and 5 men in 14 different cities.
One of the women filed a complaint before she was murdered and a supervised man killed his wife after he got out of prison.
One woman was killed for seeking a divorce, another woman was killed because she refused to have sexual relationship and another was killed due to the decision of the whole family.
27 per cent of women were killed by their husbands and other 27 per cent were killed by their relatives. 6 women were killed by their husbands, 6 were killed by relatives (groom, son, brother, step father), 3 were killed by boyfriends, one was killed by ex-husband, one was killed by a male friend, one was killed by the boss, one was killed by a man she denied to have relationship with, and 3 were killed by three men who weren’t approved by women’s family.
68 per cent of murders were committed through guns. 8 women were murdered with rifles, 7 women were murdered with pistols, 3 with knifes, two were smothered, one was beat up and killed, and one was killed exposing to the torture.
Women’s murders in August were committed in Ankara (2), Antalya, Antep, Batman (4), Bursa, Dersim, Giresun (2), İstanbul (4), İzmir, Malatya, Maraş, Trabzon, Urfa and Uşak.
Age of murderers ranged from 25 to 80 and murdered age of women and teenager girls ranged from 14 to 74.
Murders with unidentified perpetrators
Corpses of 4 different women and one teenager girl were found out in different cities (Kocaeli, Hatay, and İzmir). Their perpetrators haven’t been detected yet:
* It is ascertained that woman, whose corpse was found in the sea in Kocaeli, divorced her husband because she was exposed to violence by him. It is also stated that she had beaten parts on the head.
*2 women sex workers were killed in Hatay.
*Firemen found out the corpse of a woman in a fire incident. She was stabbed.
*A woman in Adana fought with her husband and she died after she jumped out off or threw from the balcony.
Rape
Men raped 6 women and teenager girls in August in 6 different cities and forced 3 women to prostitution. 4 victims of 6 women who raped were children.
2 of women were raped by their friends, 2 were raped by men they didn’t know, one was raped by a worker in a hotel and one was raped by a male nurse.
2 rape cases took places in cars, in a house, on a street and in a hospital.
Ages of rapers ranged from 19 to 50, ages of raped women and teenager girls ranged from 13 to 29.
Rape cases were reported in Adana, Ankara (4), Antalya, Edirne, İstanbul, and Samsun.
Harassment
In August 2014, men harassed 16 women across 8 cities in Turkey. In two cases, male perpetrators also assaulted their female victims.
81 percent of cases (13) were reported in the street. Other cases occurred in apartment (1), office (1) and on the bus (1).
Perpetrators were identified as follows: employer (1), service sector agents (2) and all others were acquintances.
One man who broke into the apartment of his employee was already standing trial for marrying a 15 year old teenager girl and sexual assault.
Harassment perpetrators were aged between 17 and 33, whereas their victims were aged between 19 and 24.
Harassment cases were reported in the following cities: Adana (3), Antalya, Bodrum, Edirne (6), Isparta, İstanbul, Kocaeli and Uşak (2).
Battery - Assault
In August 2014, men battered/assaulted 55 women across 22 cities in Turkey.
15 percent of women were battered for seeking a divorce. While 3 men exercised torture on their wives, 2 deprived their from their freedom and battered.
August’s perpetrators were identified as follows: husbands and ex-husbands (71 percent), friend (2), son-in-law (1), ex-husband (3), employer (1), brother (1), sister’s fiancee (1), husband (34), son (3), lover (2), stranger (3) and half-brother (1).
67 percent of women (37) were battered. 8 were assaulted with sharp objects and 6 with firearms. 3 women were subjected to torture. Another woman was pushed out of a balcony by her husband.
Torture cases considerably increased and excuses are mostly so: “She didn’t prepare breakfast”, “She didn’t clean the house”, or “She bought a bar of chocolate with them I gave her.”
Male perpetrators were aged between 21 and 79, female victims were aged between 18 and 83.
Male violence cases were reported in the following cities: Adana (7), Aksaray, Ankara, Antalya, Antep (2), Bartın (2), Bolu (6), Bursa (2), Çanakkale, Çorum (2), Erzurum (3), Eskişehir, İstanbul (4), İzmir (3), Kayseri (6), Konya, Maraş, Muğla, Sakarya (6), Samsun, Trabzon (2) and Urfa.
Retaliation to male violence
3 retaliation to male violence cases were reported in August 2014.
A man reportedly assaulted another man with a knife, leaving him severely wounded for the reason that he harassed his daughter and ran onto him with a knife. He was released within judiciary control measures.
A woman assaulted with a knife her husband who battered her for attending a wedding ceremony. Another woman assaulted her violent husband and harassing brother-in-law with a knife.
Regional distribution
In August 2014, 106 murder, battery, attempted murder, harassment, sexual violence, rape cases appeared in the media across 25 cities in Turkey.
While most cases were reported from the Marmara Region, 106 cases were distributed according to region as follows: Marmara (29), Mediterranean (20), Black Sea (17), Central Anatolia (16), Aegean (10), Eastern Anatolia (5) and Southeastern Anatolia (9). (ÇT/MUY/BM)
