MP Submits Motions on Womens Rights

Main opposition CHP MP Erbatur submits three parliamentary motions inquiring about governments inaptitude on underage marriages, gender discrimination on employement by the Central Bank and effectiveness of the precautions against violence.

Opposing Republican People's Party (CHP) MP Gaye Erbatur submits three parliamentary motions on gender discrimination in hiring, underage marriages and the application of the government decree on protecting women from so-called "honour killings".

Erbatur noted that underage and forced marriages keep girls from full self-development as well as constituting a violation of children's rights

Quoting state institute of statistics data, Erbatur highlighted the fact that 20.9 percent of all marriages in Turkey are made between relatives and first marriages below the official age limit constitute 19.8 percent of the total number.

She inquired about the legal and practical cautions taken by the government and the effectiveness of their implementation.

The second motion took in hand the discriminative definitions on the Turkey's Central Bank's employment add, released on January 21. The add searched for "male documentalists" or "female secretaries".

Noting that gender discrimination is forbidden by law in public bodies, Erbatur urged for an administrative inquiry into the issue.

And lastly, Erbatur demanded if the government decree titled "Precautions to be taken for suppressing violence against women and children and 'tradition or honour killings'" went into effect.

She inquired about the effectiveness of the hotline established for recourses by victims of violence and government plans on establishing new women's shelters.(AO/EÜ)
