Media Ban Taken to Court
Republican People’s Party Vice Chairman Sezgin Tanrıkulu took the media ban on the investigation regarding the four former ministers in the parliamentary investigation commission to Ankara 7th Peace Court Panel Court.
P24 Independent Journalism Platform also said they will submit a motion.
In his letter to the court, Tanrıkulu reminded the Turkish Constitution Article 28 on press freedom, Article 26/2 on freedom of expression and related ECHR ruling that convicted Turkey of right violations.
Tanrıkulu underlined that it is in public’s interest to inform public on public matters, freedoms are essential and the limitation of freedoms is an exception, and even limitations have a limit in democracies.
Tanrıkulu requested Ankara 7th Peace Court Judge Panel to remove the media ban on the issue, saying that it limited basic human rights and freedoms disproportionally without solid legal basis.
“Considering the referring articles of the law, the ban is unacceptable,” Tanrıkulu wrote. (EA/BM)
