The person who allegedly wrote a racist writing on the wall of Surp Takavor Armenian Church in the district of Kadıköy in İstanbul and dumped garbage on its front door has been released on probation.
Doğan News Agency has reported that after being taken into custody in relation with the incident, the 45 year-old S.K.was referred to İstanbul Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, which has been pursuing the investigation, after the related formalities at the security directorate were completed.
"I dumped the garbage that I had collected from the vicinity on its door"
Presenting his deposition to the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, S.K. stated that he had hanged a poster of Atatürk on the facade of the church one day before the incident and added,
"I got angry when I saw that they had put down the poster the day after. On April 30, 2018 at an hour that I do not remember, I wrote the aforementioned writings on the wall of the church and dumped the garbage that I had collected from the vicinity on the door of the church."
After his deposition, S.K. was referred to court to be released on probation. The Criminal Court of Peace on Duty ruled that S.K. be released on the condition that he gives his signature at security directorate two days a week.
On April 30, 2018, a racist writing which read, ""From Erzurum resident, this homeland is ours" was written in capital on Surp Takavor Armenian Church in the district of Kadıköy in İstanbul. Besides, garbage was dumped on the front door of the church.
After the incident, the church administration gave the video footage of the perpetrator to the police and the police launched an investigation.
Kadıköy Municipality also condemned the incident and announced that the area had been cleaned. (PT/SD)
