Independent Communication Network and Reporters Without Borders’ (RSF) joint project “Cyber Security and Journalism in Digital World Workshop” has been organized in Akyaka district in Muğla province.
Coaching of the workshops that lasted all day was undertaken by Sarp Kürkçü. The workshop hosted journalists and NGO representatives coming from Muğla and neighboring provinces.
In the workshops, training concerning HTTP, HTTPs, Pishing, operating systems, security gaps of the Windows, anti-viruses, Virtual Private Network technologies, safe communication methods, how to protect journalism himself or herself and his or her news sources, risks of disclosure on social media, Internet Service Providers and open source concept.
“There is no such thing as 100% security”
Kürkçü started his presentation saying “There is no such thing as being safe as soon as you step into digital world”.
Stating that efforts to maintain security and to protect personal data don’t grant 100% protection, Kürkçü said that it is very hard to permanently delete digital data in our day. “The safest way of deleting is to spill gasoline and burn the hard-disk”.
In the second part of the presentation, Kürkçü explained how we can fortify our security and demonstrated installation of Virtual Private Network step by step.
About the project
The Project of Digital Security for Journalists run jointly by the RSF and bianet aims to train journalists in digital security. One’s protecting his or her own security in the cyber world and accessing the information itself are among the goals of the training module. “Security” concepts in the digital world is discussed in the project and that the necessary things to be done for a safer digital life is explained in the project.
