Turkey 'Takes First Place' in Convictions at ECtHR

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has announced its 2019 annual report.
Accordingly, Turkey took first place with 35 convictions for "violation of freedom of expression and freedom of thought.
In the last year, Turkey was convicted in 97 cases on the grounds that it violated at least one article of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
Between 1959 and 2019, the ECtHR gave a judgment on 3,645 cases from Turkey. While it convicted the state in 3,225 of those cases, it did not find a violation in 86 of them.
Turkey has been convicted for violating freedom of expression for 356 times in total, more than any other state.
In terms of pending cases, Turkey comes second after Russia. 25.2 percent of the pending cases were from Russia and 15.57 were from Turkey as of December 31, 2019.
Out of 59,800 pending cases, 9,236 are from Turkey. (AS/VK)
