Trial of academics, who have been charged with "propagandizing for a terrorist organization" for having signed the declaration entitled "We will not be a party to this crime" prepared by the Academics for Peace, continued at the İstanbul Courthouse today (January 24).
The fourth hearing of Assoc. Prof. Ahmet Ersoy from Boğaziçi University has been held at the 24th Heavy Penal Court and the fourth hearing of Dr. Lecturer Yonca Demir from Bilgi University has been held at the 28th Heavy Penal Court.
The court has sentenced Dr. Lecturer Demir to 3 years in prison, stating, "The defendant is proven guilty of the offense of propagandizing for the PKK/KCK (Kurdistan Workers' Party / Kurdish Communities Union) terrorist organization."
Yonca Demir, who got the longest sentence since the trials of academics began on December 5, 2017, has said in the hearing that she does not accept the deferred announcement of the verdict.
The court board has ruled for not reducing the sentence "considering the defendant's negative behavior after the offense and during the trial."
After an argument with Demir's attorney Meriç Eyüboğlu, the presiding judge ordered the attorney out of the court hall. The academics who were watching the hearing intervened and prevented the security officers from getting the attorney out of the court hall.
The presiding judge said, "We gave a two-year sentence. Then we increased it to three years. And we did not reverse the verdict."
Demir and her attorneys will bring the case to the court of appeal.
