Trial against bianet and Lawyer Tanay Postponed
The case filed by former General Head of Prisons and Detention Stations Ertosun against lawyer Tanay and bianet website co-ordinator Kürkçü was postponed to January 2011. Tanay and Kürkçü are facing a heavy compensation claim.

A Woman's Right and Obligation to Carry her Husband's Name
Sırma Oya Tekvar Geray opened a case in order to abolish her husband's surname and bear her maiden name only. The court dropped procedures in the first hearing. "No one can object to carrying her husband's surname since it is the right of a women", the court reasoned.

The Kurdish politician Aysel Tuğluk is facing 75 years in jail on charges of "spreading propaganda for a terrorist organization" in twelve different speeches made between 2005 and 2010.

Policeman on Trial is Lost...
The second hearing of the case regarding the attack of a police officer Aktaş against a journalist Özhan revealed that the policeman was appointed to a different province in the meantime. Video footage shall be acquired until the next hearing in half a year's time.

Police officer Tuncay Aktaş is on trial because of beating journalist Ozan Özhan. He is charged with "actual bodily harm". The trial is being continued on 15 December at the Beyoğlu 2nd Magistrate Criminal Court.

Taraf newspaper writer Neşe Düzel is litigated over an interview with M.Ş. Gençdal, spokesman of a group of the Quandil group that entered Turkey last year upon the call of imprisoned PKK leader Öcalan. Düzel is facing prison terms.

Batman Post executive Çelik is indicted for an interview with the family of PKK member Korkmaz who was killed in 1986. Journalist Atay from the Batman newspaper is tried for publishing a PKK announcement regarding an explosion in Batman that killed 4 rights activists.

Journalist Berivan Eker Remains in Prison
The prosecutor of the Diyarbakır 6th High Criminal Court demands prison terms of up to 21years for Berivan Eker, former chief editor of the Renge Heviya Jine magazine. If the court dismisses the appeal against her detention, Eker will be in prison till 25 January 2011.

Writer Akhanlı Released Pending Trial
Writer Akhanlı was released pending trial in the first hearing after 113 days in detention. Akanlı was arrested this August when he entered Turkey from his home country Germany because of his alleged involvement in an armed robbery 21 years ago.

Court Insists on Detentions
No further releases were decided in the third hearing of the "Revolutionary Headquarters" trial. Customs officer Öncü and Captain Öztürk have been detained for 18 months now and will remain in prison for another 5 months until the next hearing on 12 April.

Günter Wallraff and Turkish Writers Support Indicted Author
The German author Günter Wallraff will be one of the observers at the trial against Erdoğan Akhanlı who has been detained for 5 months because of an armed robbery allegedly committed on behalf o an illegal organization in 1989. Wallraff supports Akhanlı who is facing a life sentence.

Pro-Kurdish DTP member Alınak is tried together with another 93 people under "propaganda" charges on the grounds of a critical press release issued after the ban of the political party. Alınak will apply to the ECHR for the right to a defence in Kurdish as his mother tongue.

Atalay, mayor of the south-eastern province of Batman, was sentenced to 2.5 years in jail for alleged spreading of propaganda for an illegal organization. Gençdal from the Group for a Peaceful and Democratic Solution received a 20-month sentence.

Former Special Authority Prosecutor Osman Şanal filed a compensation claim against Radikal newspaper reporter İsmail Saymaz because of the journalist's book "The Postmodern Jihad". Saymaz faces a total of 97 years behind bars in twelve different trials.

Letter "Q" Constitutes Element of Crime
Sociologist Beşikçi and Layer Şimşek are accused of "spreading propaganda for the PKK". In the second hearing of the case, the prosecutor saw an element of crime in the use of the letter "q", which is not part of the Turkish but of the Kurdish alphabet.

Taraf newspaper journalists Düzel and Demir are facing imprisonment of 7.5 years for an interview with executives of the militant Kurdistan Workers Party. Düzel rejected the charges of "propaganda for an illegal organization" and claimed to have made "political propaganda".

A Silivri court handed down a monetary fine of TL 4,500 to defendants Taştan and Topal for "registering personal data". They stood trial for alleged Protestant missionary activities. The defendants were acquitted of charges of inciting hatred and insult of 'Turkishness'.

Journalist Kütahyalı Sentenced upon Deputy's Complaint
An Istanbul Court handed down a monetary fine of TL 14,000 in compensation to journalist Kütahyalı from Taraf newspaper. The journalist was sentenced because he called Republican People's Party deputy Arıtman the "racist-fascist CHP deputy from Izmir".
