İHD-TİHV 2009 HUMAN RIGHTS REPORT
2009: 36 Deaths in Prison, 36 Deaths for Ignoring "Stop Warning"
According to the annual report of the Turkish rights organizations İHD and TİHV for 2009, 36 people died in prison, 6 in detention, 61 were shot by village guards, 36 died for ignoring the police's "stop warning". 50 soldiers and 91 armed militants died in conflicts.

Primary school teacher F.N. was suspended after she had kicked a six-year-old student in class. The teachers' union demands a thorough investigation of the general situation at the school in southern Turkey and emphasized that the resignation of one or two people is not enough.

Impunity in Torture Case with New Prosecutor?
Newly assigned prosecutor Calık in the torture case of Engin Çeber, who died from torture in detention, requested a life sentence for only two of a total of 60 defendants and acquittal for ten police officers. Lawyer Tanay criticized that the demanded sentences resemble an exemption from punishment.
