Stalemate Between Unions and Governor as May Day Nears
Throughout the week, the talks between Turkey’s major workers unions and Governor of Istanbul have resulted in a stalemate over the celebration venue for this year’s May Day celebrations. Governor Mutlu recommended Yenikapı Square for May Day, while DISK President Kani Beko stated that they are insistent about celebrating at Taksim.

Unemployment Benefit to be Reduced to 5 Months
CHP politician Çelebi and the socialist trade union DİSK criticized the plan to reduce unemployment benefit to the duration of five months. They said that only a very few people could benefit from the fund that should be made available for more people more easily.

Journalists' Impact on Labour Day

May Day Ends with Excessive Police Violence
Unions ended the May Day activity in Şişli following the excessive violence by the police forces. DİSK president Çelebi said that “Our friends ended up in the hospitals. They used all kinds of violence. Whole Turkey became Taksim.”
