Detentions in the scope of major cases currently tried in Turkey caused criticism within the country and from abroad. Bianet talked to representatives of Turkish human rights organizations about applications of detentions as a significant part of legal procedures.

13 Left Wing Activists Arrested Under Terrorism Charges
13 out of 17 people who were under police custody last week under charges of affiliation with a clandestine Revolutionary Headquarters Organization are arrested. The arrested belong to legal political groups of the Social Democracy Party and the the Platform for Social Freedom .

DİHA Reporter Detained, Demonstrator Severely Injured
A Van court detained DİHA reporter Çiftçi and a further 10 people under charges of "connection to the KCK", the umbrella organization of the PKK. Cemil Akgül, a young man who protested the detentions, got severely injured on his head.

MP Kaplan: Systematic Plan against Kurdish Students
Peace and Democracy Party Şırnak MP Kaplan described the "Action Plan" sent to universities by the Council of Higher Education as "Five-Year Medium-Term Plan" aimed at "systematically arresting and detaining Kurdish university students.

1,483 DTP Members Detained for 1 Year without Indictment
Demirtaş, Co-Chair of the Peace and Democracy Party, criticized the ongoing detention of 1,483 Kurdish politicians, local executives and rights defenders in the context of "KCK operations". "In eight years, we saw nothing but cruelty from AKP", he said.

Belgium Courts decided to prosecute Kongra-Gel leader Kartal together with PKK member Aydar and four other people in the context of the PKK operation in Belgium. In three French cities, employees of Roj TV and their family members were arrested.

Another Two Military Officers Detained
With the two latest arrests of Colonel Özçoban from Konya and Lieutenant Colonel Kelleli a total of 35 suspects have been taken into detention regarding the "Balyoz" coup plans. Özçoban stands accused of being involved into the plan of bombing the Beyazit Mosque in Istanbul.

Dozens of BDP Members Arrested - Again
In operations carried out in eleven provinces last weekend the police arrested more than 100 people, most of them members of the Peace and Democracy Party. Of all people arrested in Hakkari, 15 persons were taken into detention.

Postager.com Writer Imprisoned since Sunday
Postager.com internet author Yıldız was taken to a prison in Istanbul under allegations of refusing testimony in a case launched after an operation against the Kurdistan Communities Confederation. If Yıldız is not released after giving his statement, he will be taken to Adana.

23 people of a total of 35 taken into custody on 24 December are kept in detention, among them 7 mayors, İHD Deputy Chairman Muharem Erbey and Democratic Society Congress spokesman Hatip Dicle.

IMF-DB PROTESTS
141 Official Arrests and 2 Detentions after 2 Days of Clashes
According to information obtained from the Contemporary Lawyers Association, most of the protestors detained during the demonstrations against IMF and World Bank were assaulted in police vehicles. Many people sustained bruises and swellings. 27 people arrested on the second day were still not released although 24 hours had already elapsed.

Police Detention for Some Voters
The police made use of the address-based registry of voters to find out where wanted persons would be voting. 590 people were taken into custody. Rights activist Yurtsever was wrongly detained.
