Roboski Victims’ Relative Seeks Compensation After Four Detentions
Ferhat Encü filed a suit for 20,000 Turkish Liras in respect of non-pecuniary damages after police took him under custody four times over on the same charge. Encü, who lost 11 relatives in last year’s Roboski massacre, believes that it was his quest for justice that prompted officials to take action against him.

KESK Leader Özgen Released; More Arrests Follow
Authorities released Lami Özgen, the head of the Confederation of Public Sector Trade Unions (KESK,) following Monday’s massive crackdown that led to the detention of dozens of union members. Officials arrested 28 of those detainees in the past two days, however.

The Erzurum Juvenile Court decided to keep 15-year-old Ö.S. in prison because "evidence has not been collected" yet after the juvenile has been detained for 14 months already.

Behind Bars for Wearing a Keffiyeh
University student Kırmızıgül was arrested because he allegedly attended a demonstration. The evidence shown for his arrest was the Keffiyeh he had wrapped around his neck. Kırmızıgül has been imprisoned for 18 months.

Independent Deputies Stay in Prison
The release of independent deputies of the Labour, Democracy and Freedom Block, among them Hatip Dicle, was rejected. The police massively intervened against political protestors in Istanbul. More than 20 people were taken into police custody, many were injured.

Students in Jail for at Least 20 Months for Posting Banner
"Freedom for Ferhat Tüzer and Berna Yılmaz" was the message of the supporters of the two university students who have been detained for 14 months because they posted a banner calling for free education. The students remained in detention. The trial was postponed to 6 October.

Appeals against Detention of Journalists Rejected
The appeals against the detentions of journalists Ahmet Şık and Nedim Şener were rejected by court. Both were arrested on 6 March in the scope of the Ergenekon investigation. The decision does not mention a concrete reason. Turkey is facing national and international criticism.

Graduate Student Remains in Detention - Reasons Unclear
Graduate student Edemir has been detained for one year because of his alleged membership of an armed organization. The prosecutor demanded his release but the court decided to keep him in detention. Lawyer Aslan criticized that her client is detained without reason.

Journalist Berivan Eker Remains in Prison
The prosecutor of the Diyarbakır 6th High Criminal Court demands prison terms of up to 21years for Berivan Eker, former chief editor of the Renge Heviya Jine magazine. If the court dismisses the appeal against her detention, Eker will be in prison till 25 January 2011.

Conscientious Objector Süver Remains in Prison
The Izmir Şirinyer Military Court dismissed the request for the release of conscientious objector İnan Süver. Süver is said to have been sentenced to imprisonment of 35 months. The case was adjourned to 15 November.

Release of Writer Akhanlı Rejected for the Third Time
An Istanbul court dismissed the third demand to release writer Akhanlı who is detained because of an alleged "connection to an armed organization". Once the Istanbul 11th High Criminal Court accepts the indictment it will also announce the date of the first hearing.

Kurdish Journalist Kılınç Detained 5 Months after Conviction
Journalist Kılınç, former official of the Kurdish Azadiya Welat newspaper, was detained on 22 July. He had received a prison sentence of more than 21 years in February on the grounds of spreading propaganda for the PKK in some of the articles published in the paper.

Yıldırım form the Aydınlık magazine and Akkaya from the National Channel were taken to court for the first time since their detention 8 months ago. They are tried for reporting about telephone calls made by the Prime Minister with former President of Northern Cyprus Talat.

Chief Editor of Women Magazine Detained since March!
Gurbet Çakar, editorial manager of the Kurdish-Turkish women magazine Rengê Hevîya Jinê, has been in detention for three months. A Diyarbakır court decided to extend her detention for at least 20 days. She had previously been sentenced to more than three years in jail.

Labour Party Lawyers Protested Ergenekon Trial
In the latest Ergenekon case hearing, about 20 joint attorneys of the Labour Party took off their gowns and left the court room in protest of the recent detention of Labour Party Deputy Chair Cengiz. Officer Şahbaz, tried in the second Ergenekon case, was released pending trial.

Journalists Returned from Israel - İHH Employee Dead
Humanitarian Help Foundation employee Cevdet Kılıçlar was killed during the Isreali attack on the aid ships bound to Gazza on 31 May. Sabah reporter Olgun said that all their personal belongings were seized. IPI criticized: "Worrying signal sent by Israel to repressive nations".

First Hearing for Journalist after 1 Year in Detention
Worker-Peasant newspaper employee Zengin will be taken to court for the first time on 26 August after one year in detention. Zengin declined charges of "membership to an illegal organization" in a letter sent from an Istanbul prison.

Energy Minister Punched - Attacker Detained
Energy Minister Yıldız was punched in his face at a funeral. A court in Kayseri decided to detain the attacker pending trial. The Ministry of the Interior appointed two inspectors to investigate the incident. PM Erdoğan said that the background of the attack will be revealed.

Journalist Detained for Speaking Kurdish at Court
Mehdi Tanrıkulu, editorial manager of the Kurdish Azadiya Welat newspaper, was arrested upon his claim to make his defence in court in Kurdish. Tanrıkulu faces imprisonment of up to ten years. He referred to the Treaty of Lausanne and the European Court of Human Rights.

Another 20 Arrests in "Sledgehammer Coup Plan" Investigation
Police operations in the context of the "Sledgehammer coup plan" carried out in Ankara, Istanbul, Izmir and Çanakkale on 5 April resulted in the arrest of 20 people. Senior Rear Admiral Tuncay Çakan from the Istanbul Gülhane Military Medical Academy was among the people arrested.

53 Detainees Apply to ECHR after 1 Year in Prison
Almost one year has passed since the detention of 53 people, among them politicians and journalists, related to an operation against the Kurdish KCK organization. The lawyers of the detainees applied to the ECHR after no action had been taken by Turkish courts for ten months.

"Parasız eğitim istiyoruz" -the slogan "We want free education" on a banner displayed at the "Romani meeting", which was also attended by PM Erdoğan, is seen as an illegal slogan and was reason to detain two young people. Allegedly, holding up the banner was a criminal offence.

Suspect Detained in Journalist Murder Case
Three people were arrested related to the murder of journalist Cihan Hayırsevener from Bandırma on the southern coast of the Sea of Marmara. Defendant Serkan Erakkuş was taken in detention, two other defendants were released and will be tried un-detained.

Dünya Radio broadcasting director Kenan Karavil and Seyithan Akyüz from the Kurdish Azadia Welat newspaper were kept in custody for 4 days and are now in prison under charges of "membership to the PKK organization".
