BIA APRIL-JUNE 2014 MEDIA MONITORING REPORT
The Media’s 3 Months: 186 Journalists Fired
23 journalists entered the month of July in prison. 15 new cases were filed based on the TMK in April-June 2014; 38 people were convicted in total to 2 months 15 days in prison and 277,400 TL in fines for insulting the Prime Minister. 54 reporters were attacked. The ECHR gave a penalty of 160,000 TL in fines.

17 people were convicted to a total of 31 years of prison in the first three months of 2014 for insulting Prime Minister Erdoğan. 35 journalists ve 15 publishers are behind bars. YouTube is banned, Twitter is banned and then reopened. At least 40 assaults were made towards mediaworkers and journalists.

2013 BIA MEDIA MONITORING
2013 Media: Arrests, Assaults, Editorial Interventions, Layoffs
While 59 journalists and 23 publishers were arrested in 2013; 186 journalists, 1 media outlet and 2 internet sites were subjected to attacks. ECHR ordered to Turkey to pay 198,935 euros in FoE related cases. 143 media workers lost their jobs.

Press Freedom Upside Down!
Not a single] policeman has been convicted for assaulting journalists during Turkey’s Gezi Resistance. While 59 journalists and 23 publishers entered 2014 behind bars, 13 defendants including 4 journalists have been convicted of “terrorism” charges according to Turkish Penal Code and Anti-Terror Act with 2 life sentences and a total of 1,609 years and 4 months of prison.

69 journalists and 30 distributors were behind bars between January and March 2013 in Turkey. Out of 69 journalists and 30 publishers currently jailed in Turkey, 44 journalists and 29 distributors were from the Kurdish media.

104 Journalists and 30 Distributors in Prison
104 journalists and 30 distributors went to jail until the end of 2011. The journalists are in prison under allegations of affiliations with illegal organizations in the scope of the Anti-Terror Law and the Turkish Criminal Law. 94 out of these 134 press workers are from Kurdish media outlets.

Anti-Terror Law Took the Lead in 2010
The BİA 2010 Annual Media Monitoring Report claims that 220 people, among them 104 journalists, were tried for the opinions they voiced in words and writing in 2010. Penalties handed down by the ECHR were on the rise as well as domestic convictions under the Anti-Terror Law. 30 journalists were in jail.

BIA Quarterly Report Released: State's Security Hijacks The Freedom Of Expression
Quarterly Freedom Of Expression Monitoring Report by BIA observes: 116 individuals, 77 of them journalists, were tried in 73 different cases for their opinions and reporting rights violations by the state. 36 of them were tried under article 301. Crimes against journalists go unpunished and military based censorship is increasing.
