Young People Tell Their Experiences of Flirting Violence

The Association for Struggle Against Sexual Violence has published the results of its study, which has been conducted as part of its "How is it Going!? Educational Education Project" (Ne Var Ne Yok?! Eğitici Eğitim Projesi) and where the high-school students have offered their solutions for flirting violence.

94 young people who took part in an online survey conducted by the association have shared their solutions for flirting violence.
When the project, which is oriented towards flirting violence among youngsters and was launched in October 2017, ended in July 2018, it had reached 20 counselors and 5 thousand 518 young people.

56 percent have experienced flirting violence

94 voluntary youngsters, 41 percent of whom chose the option of men, 52 percent the option of women and 1 of them the option of "other," participated in the survey.

20 percent of the participants are at the 9th class, 52 percent of them at the 10th class, 3 percent of them at the 11th class and 25 percent of them are at 12th class.

While 38.7 percent of the participants have never had an emotional relationship, 40.3 percent of them previously had such a relationship but do not currently have one. 22.4 percent of the young people are currently in a relationship.

Based on the definition of flirting violence provided to them, 56 percent of the participants stated that they have experienced flirting violence before.

* Flirting violence can be defined as any damaging forms of behavior where one or both of the sides try to achieve power and control over the other before, during or after an emotional, romantic and/or sexual relationship. Flirting violence can be in emotional/ verbal, physical, sexual, psychological and virtual forms as well as through stalking.

Based on the same definition, 67 participants (71.2 percent) stated that they have witnessed flirting violence. 89.6 percent of them have also said that flirting violence can be prevented and proposed their solutions for flirting violence. (BK/SD)
