TurkStat: Government's education expenditures made up only 4.4 percent of GDP in 2019

Turkey's education expenditures stood at 259.22 billion lira (~33 billion US dollars) in 2019, with an 18 percent increase from the previous year, according to Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) data released today.

Total education expenditures amounted to 6 percent of Turkey's gross domestic product (GDP) last year whereas it was 5.8 percent in 2018.

The share of the government's education expenditures in the GDP also increased from 4.3 to 4.4 percent in 2019.

Education expenditures increased at most in primary education with 31.9 percent and lower secondary education with 26.4 percent in 2019 compared to the previous year.

Public institutions spent 30.3 percent of their total education expenditure on tertiary education.

38.4 percent of education expenditure spent by private organizations was for upper secondary education and 36.8 percent for tertiary education.

74 percent of education expenditure in Turkey in 2019 was spent by the public sources. The share of education expenditure by households was 20.8 percent.

While the education expenditure per student in Turkey in 2019 was 10 thousand 5 lira, this amount reached a total of 11,769 lira in 2019.

When evaluated according to educational levels, the highest level of education expenditure per student in 2019 was for tertiary education with 18,830 lira.

The total education expenditure per student was increased by 17.6 percent. The level of education which reached the highest increase in 2019 compared to 2018 about education expenditure by financing source was primary schools with 30.1 percent. This was followed by the lower secondary school with 25.1 percent. (HA/VK)
