Turkey's Coronavirus Cases Top 90 Thousand, Erdoğan Declares Four-Day Curfew

The Health Ministry has confirmed 123 more fatalities from the novel coronavirus over the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 2,140.

The total number of registered coronavirus cases surged to 90,980 as 4,674 more people tested positive for the virus.

So far, a total of 13,430 people have recovered and been discharged from hospitals, while 1,454 patients were discharged today (April 20) only, according to the figures.

Also, 39,703 tests were conducted over the past day, with the total number of tests reaching 673,980.

Four-day curfew

The government also plans to extend the weekend curfew this week in 31 provinces as part of measures against the coronavirus, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced today.

Starting on Thursday, April 23, which is a public holiday commemorating the foundation of the parliament, Turkey will impose curfew in 31 provinces to contain the spread of the virus. The curfew will end at midnight on April 26.

Turkey observes the National Sovereignty and Children's Day on April 23 every year. This year marks the centennial of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey.

After originating in China last December, Covid-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, has spread to at least 185 countries and regions across the world. Europe and the US are currently the worst-hit regions.

The pandemic has killed over 167,000 people, with total infections exceeding 2.43 million, while more than 639,000 have recovered from the disease, according to figures compiled by the US-based Johns Hopkins University. (EKN/VK)
