Students exempted from increase in public transport fares in İstanbul

The Transportation Coordination Center (UKOME) of the opposition-led İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İMM) increased the public transport fares by 40 percent on April 6 amid increasing costs in the country. In a new development, students are now exempted from the raise.

Tevfik Göksu, the Esenler District Mayor and the ruling Justice and Development Party's (AKP) Group Deputy Chair at the İstanbul Metropolitan Municipal Council, submitted a motion on Monday (April 11) and requested that students be exempted from the fare hikes.

The municipal council has approved the motion by a majority of votes. Accordingly, The monthly public transport subscription fee for students has been exempted from the 40-percent increase, which means that monthly subscription will once again cost 78 Turkish Lira (TRY).

With the previous price increase, the monthly public transport subscription fee for students rose from 78 TRY to 109 TRY. The difference between the two will now be met by the İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality.
