Some areas in various parts of the country have been declared "sensitive areas in absolute protection" by presidential decrees.
Sultan Sazlığı Protected Area in the central Anatolian province of Kayseri, Dönemeç Sazlıkları Potential Natural Protected area in the eastern Van province, Hafik Lake in the central Anatolian province of Sivas and Gölyanı Plateau in the Black Sea province of Giresun are the areas declared "sensitive areas in absolute protection."
Some areas in Birecik, Şanlıurfa in southeastern Turkey have been declared "wildlife development zones."
According to the "Regulation Regarding Principles and Procedures on the Identification, Registration and Certification of Protected" published in the Official Gazette on July 19, 2012, there are three types of protected areas: "Sensitive areas in absolute protection," "qualified natural protection areas," and "sustainable protection and controlled usage areas."
In the sensitive areas in absolute protection, construction is banned and all usage except scientific studies are restricted.
The qualified natural protection areas are areas where local people can use resources and sustain traditional ways of life.
The areas of sustainable protection and controlled usage are areas where "low intensity activities," tourism and dwelling are allowed. (HA/VK)
