Public backlash against AKP’s ‘Who are you?’ video

In a video prepared by the ruling AKP’s Youth Organization, citizens are asked, “Who are you?” While the video starts with Musʽab ibn ʽUmair, a companion of Prophet Muhammad, it ends with President and AKP Chair Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The Justice and Development Party (AKP) Youth Organization shared a video on its social media account yesterday (October 20).

As the video asks citizens, "Who are you?" (Sen Kimsin?), the hashtag #senkimsin became a trending topic on Twitter due to the reactions.

While the video of the party starts with Musʽab ibn ʽUmair, a companion (sahabi) of Prophet Muhammad and ends with President and AKP Chair Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, it also features a series of other figures such as Ottoman Sultans Suleiman the Magnificent and Mehmed the Conquerer, former Prime Minister Adnan Menderes and poet Necip Fazıl Kısakürek.

Intended as a publicity stunt, the video has received several negative reactions on social media with messages referring to male violence and feminicides in Turkey as well as violence against animals, the destruction of nature and the people who lost their lives in occupational homicides.

Some of these messages are as follows:

Mısra Öz, who lost his son Oğuz Arda Sel in Çorlu Train Massacre: "You are the one who made a celebration for Presidency one day after your 25 citizens, including 7 children, died. You are the one who did not hear our cry for justice and turned your back on us. I am Oğuz Arda Sel! I am the mother of Oğuz Arda Sel! I am a mother who demands justice!"

Women's Defense: "I am Nadira Kadirova, who suspiciously died in the house of AKP MP Şirin Ünal. I am Rabia Naz, whose murderer 'cannot be found,' I am Yeldana Kaharman. Ayşe Paşalı, Emine Bulut, Özgecan Aslan, Şule Çet, Aleyna Çakır... I am all massacred women and I am the one who will topple your rule."

İstanbul Solidarity for Ida Mountains: "I am the Ida Mountains, the brooks and higlands of the Black Sea, Kışladağ, Northern Forests, Hasankeyf, Fatsa, which you have destroyed with you geoelectrical power plants, hydroelectric power plants and all types of monstrous projects; I am the tree, the bird, the insect and air. In short, I am nature!"

"I am Mehmet Ayvalıtaş, Abdullah Cömert, Ethem Sarısülük, Ali İsmail Korkmaz, Ahmet Atakan, Berkin Elvan, Burak Can Karamanoğlu, Mehmet İstif, Elif Çermik, who lost their lives in Gezi; I am 301 miners who lost their lives in Soma; I am 103 lives lost in Ankara Train Station."

Human Rights Association (İHD) Co-Chair, lawyer Eren Keskin: "I am lawyer Medet Serhat and Şevket Epözdemir, who were massacred by the counterguerilla; I am lawyer Tahir Elçi!"

Kazım Koyuncu Cultural Center: "We are the brooks that you have destroyed with your hydroelectric power plants; we are the Cerattepe and other places that you have turned upside down for 'gold'; we are Kazım and others like him that you caused to have cancer."

"I am Dilek Özçelik, in whose pocket a Minister pressed money for medicine, whose cries for help were not heard and who was abandoned to death."

"I am Hrant Dink, who was heinously massacred by the hitman of the state."

"I am Nadira Kadirova, whom AKP's Şirin Ünal massacred. I am Rabia Naz, whom you massacred, but whose file you closed, saying that she had committed suicide. I am Gülistan Doku, whom you have not found for 290 days. I am Furkan Celep, Sibel Ünli, Ömer Ateş, Melek Kurtuluş, Berfin, whom your system exploited..."(EKN/SD)
