Population of 10 Most Crowded Districts of İstanbul Larger Than 22 European Countries

According to the "Results of Address-Based Population Registration System" released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) yesterday (February 4), the population of İstanbul, the most crowded city of Turkey, has reached 15 million 519 thousand 267 as of December 31, 2019.

The figures shared by the Institute have shown that the population of the city has grown by 451 thousand 543 people in a year.

While the most crowded district of İstanbul is Esenyurt with 954 thousand 579 inhabitants, it is followed by Küçükçekmece with 792 thousand 821 people and by Bağcılar with 745 thousand 125 people.

Population larger than several European countries

There are 39 districts in İstanbul. The total population of 10 most crowded districts of the city is 6 million 597 thousand 426 people.

The total population of 10 most crowded districts of İstanbul is larger than those of following 22 European countries: Denmark, Estonia, Ireland, Croatia, Lithuania, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania, Andorra, Kosovo, San Marino, Bosnia Herzegovina and Moldova.

While there is no data on the populations of Bosnia Herzegovina and Moldova in 2019, the population of the former was 3 million 502 thousand 550 and that of the latter was 3 million 547 thousand 539 in 2018.

The populations of Turkey's neighboring countries Armenia and Georgia are also smaller than that of 10 most crowded districts of İstanbul combined. While the population of Georgia is 3 million 723 thousand 464, that of Armenia is 2 million 965 thousand 269 in 2019.

Highest population growth rate in Esenyurt

Esenyurt, the most crowded district of İstanbul, also has the highest population growth rate. While the population of Esenyurt has increased by 63 thousand 459 people in a year, it is followed by Başakşehir with a growth rate of 32 thousand 424 and by Kadıköy with 24 thousand 75.

As for the district with the lowest population growth rate, it is recorded in Güngören with only 110 new inhabitants.

In 2019, the districts of İstanbul by the size of their population were as follows: Esenyurt, Küçükçekmece, Bağcılar, Pendik, Ümraniye, Bahçelievler, Sultangazi, Üsküdar, Maltepe, Gaziosmanpaşa, Kadıköy, Kartal, Başakşehir, Esenler, Avcılar, Kağıthane, Fatih, Sancaktepe, Ataşehir, Eyüpsultan, Beylikdüzü, Sarıyer, Sultanbeyli, Zeytinburnu, Güngören, Arnavutköy, Şişli, Bayrampaşa, Tuzla, Çekmeköy, Büyükçekmece, Beykoz, Beyoğlu, Bakırköy, Silivri, Beşiktaş, Çatalca, Şile and Adalar.
