'Next election in Turkey might be the most anti-democratic of all'

After the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office of the Court of Cassation applied to the Constitutional Court and filed a lawsuit for closing the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) yesterday (March 17), several social media users, including journalists, lawyers and politicians, have criticized the case which also foresees a political ban on 687 HDP politicians.

We have compiled some of these messages:

HDP'nin kapatılmasının yanında, 600'den fazla HDP'li hakkında siyasi yasak istenmiş. HDP'liler gelecek seçimlerde hiçbir varlık gösteremesin isteniyor. Bu kadar seçilmiş hapisteyken zaten demokrasiden söz edilemez, ama gelecek seçim en antidemokratik genel seçim olabilir.

Journalist Banu Güven: "In addition to closing the HDP, there is also a request for a political ban on over 600 HDP politicians. They want the HDP politicians to have no presence in the next elections. One cannot talk about democracy when so many elected politicians are behind bars, but the next elections might be most anti-democratic of all."

Academic Yaman Akdeniz: "Whenever something sounding good like 'Human Rights Action Plan' comes up in the country, something very bad happens afterwards. Today, they both stripped Gergerlioğlu of his MP status and pulled the trigger to close the HDP."

DEVA Party Chair Ali Babacan: "Political legitimacy is ensured by the support of society. Trying to hinder a party which got 6 million votes via the judiciary means disrespect for our nation who voted. Our democracy can improve in an environment where different opinions are discussed. Blocking the way of politics means condemning the country to a deadlock."

Lecturer Metin Cihan: "AK Party MPs post nothing about Gergerlioğlu or the HDP. They do not say, 'We did the right thing.' Those from the [Nationalist Movement Party] MHP share it quite confidently.
